Electrical Safety Tips for Your Home and Family

A little common sense can go a long way when it comes to electricity. But some things are easy to overlook, and others are not as well known. So in today’s blog, we would like to talk to you about a few safety tips when it comes to electricity at your home. So keep reading to catch a few ideas to keep yourself and your family safe.

Outlets

One of the most important things to remember about outlets is to not overload them. If you use multiple splitters to be able to plug-in more things into the same outlet, that is a sign you need more outlets, not more splitters. If you are tripping breakers repeatedly, that can be an unsafe situation. Call a professional electrician at Lake of the Ozarks right away, and don’t forget to teach your family the same. Do you have outlets with only two holes in your home? It is not OK to remove the ground prong on the plug to fix the problem. Having only two holes means that your house is probably not wired with a ground wire, and that could be dangerous. In addition, you want to be sure you have GFCI outlets anywhere near water or in high moisture areas and you may also benefit from having tamper resistant outlets installed to protect the kids in the home.

Cords and Plugs

Do you use extension cords and power strips on a continuous basis? It would be much safer to have outlets added by a professional electrician at Lake of the Ozarks. That way you have plenty of outlets located exactly where you need them most. When you do use a power strip, we highly recommend that it be UL certified. If it cost less than $10, it probably is not. We have also learned that some people don’t realize it can be a safety hazard to put extension cords in walkways or under rugs where they may be walked on, and it’s also a safety hazard to use extension cords outside unless they are made for outdoor use. One final thing to remember with cords and plugs is to be sure and grasp the plug and not the cord to pull it out from the outlet. Using the cord can strain and break wires and lead to safety issues later.

Appliances

A few safety tips for appliances include unplugging them when they’re not in use. This is especially true for anything that generates heat. Don’t just turn them off, unplug them. Another thing to consider and talk with your family about is not using any electrical device near water. Some people don’t realize that it is not OK to take a bath while your cell phone is plugged into the charger. If your cell phone were to drop into the water with you while it was plugged in, electrocution is likely. This is not something most teens think about. The last thing about appliances is to give them some space. Good air circulation helps prevent heat buildup and the hazards that can come with it.
