Safety Tips for Using Powerstrips!

Powerstrips certainly have their  purpose, but we find that many home owners and business owners use them incorrectly. Keeping safety in mind at all times when it comes to electrical devices is critical for your safety and those around you. Read on to get a few safety tips for using powerstrips!

Choose a Power Strip with Overload Protection

Some power strips come with the safety feature overload protection. This feature will automatically cut off the power supply when the power strip is overloaded.

Don't Use Power Strips for High Wattage Appliances

Larger appliances such as heaters, TVs, stoves, etc. require high wattage to run which means they need more power. Most power strips are not designed to handle a high amount of wattage and therefore should not be used for those appliances.

Don't Use the Piggyback Method, Ever

Unfoutunilty, many folks use the piggyback method if they don't have enough outlets - this is especially true around your tv! The piggyback method is when you use overload a powerstrip and create more room, then you plug another powerstrip into it to create more plugs. This is a BIG no no! Each power strip is only rated for a certain amount of electric current - each power strip is different depending on the design and structure. Piggybacking is an extreme fire hazard and should never be done.

Extensions Cords are NOT for Permanent Use

Some people don't realize that extension cords are absolutely not intended for permanent use - or they choose to ignore it for the convenience factor. For your safety and the safety of others, don't use an extension cord as a permanent power solution.
