Most of us are guilty of overloading powerstrips - especially for our electronics and appliances! Overloading outlets and powerstrips can be dangerous causing electric shock and in more serious cases, an electrical fire. Choose a Power Strip with Overload Protection
Some power strips come with the safety feature overload protection. This feature will automatically cut off the power supply when the power strip is overloaded.
Don't Use Power Strips for High Wattage Appliances
Larger appliances such as heaters, TVs, stoves, etc. require high wattage to run which means they need more power. Most power strips are not designed to handle a high amount of wattage and therefore should not be used for those appliances.
Don't Use the Piggyback Method, Ever
Unfoutunilty, many folks use the piggyback method if they don't have enough outlets - this is especially true around your tv! The piggyback method is when you use overload a powerstrip and create more room, then you plug another powerstrip into it to create more plugs. This is a BIG no no! Each power strip is only rated for a certain amount of electric current - each power strip is different depending on the design and structure. Piggybacking is an extreme fire hazard and should never be done.
