Safety Tips for Electric Fireplaces
Colder weather is here and many of us utilize an electric fireplace as an additional heat source in our homes. Electric fireplaces are great for both heating and adding cozy appeal to our living spaces. Most electrical fireplaces are safe to use but as with any electrical appliance, there are a few safety precautions to take into consideration when in use. Today, our electricians at the Lake of the Ozarks have five safety tips for using electric fireplaces.

#1 Keep Objects Away
Even though there is no real fire, you should still exercise caution and keep objects a safe distance away. The heat can be a fire hazard when it comes into contact with a nearby object. Keep objects such as toys, blankets, furniture, and electronics at least three feet away.
#2 Turn off When You're Away
You shouldn't leave your electric fireplace on when you're not home. When you leave your home, it's best to turn off the fireplace. Leaving your electric fireplace unplugged when it's not in use is the best practice.
#3 Teach Children Heater Safety
Electric fireplaces do generate high temperatures. If you have children in your home, it's important to teach them to not go near the fireplace. Again, there are not real flames but the electric fireplace can still get very hot.
#4 Don't Overload Your Outlet
It's common for people to use an electric fireplace as an entertainment center. When you use an electric fireplace as a heat source and an entertainment center, be sure that you do not overload your outlet. An overloaded outlet can be a fire hazard. It's important to not use extension cords as a means to plug in more electrical devices in. You may need a dedicated circuit to handle the increase in devices.
Electric fireplaces are a great solution for heating a small space. Especially for those that are allergic or sensitive to wood heat fireplaces. We hope that you found these safety tips helpful for the best safety practices when you use your electric fireplace.
