Why Isn't My Outlet Working?

Do you have any outlets in your home that aren't working? Non-working outlets are common occurrences in not only older homes, but newer homes too! It can be very frustrating to plug something in and find out that the outlet isn't working properly. There are many reasons that could cause a faulty outlet ranging from something minor to even more major issues in your homes electrical system. Today, our electrical contracting company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a list of a few reasons an outlet(s) isn't working at your home or your business.

#1 Your Circuit Breaker Tripped

Generally, if an outlet isn't working the first thing you should check is your circuit breaker. It's possible that someone overloaded the circuit. Check your breaker panel and see if any of your breakers and flipped. This is an easy fix and typically doesn't require an electrician to come out.

However, if this problem does continue to happen, it may be a sign that your home's electrical system can't handle your electrical needs. If you overload an outlet, it can be extremely dangerous because it's a fire hazard. If your circuit continues to fail, it's best to reach out to an electrician in Osage Beach, Mo that you can trust.

#2 Loose Connection

Another common cause of a failed outlet is a loose connection. This is common with old wiring in particular. If you have loose connection in your outlet, your outlet can create more heat than normal and a small flare-up can occur and cause your outlet's wiring to burn out.

#3 Poor Electrical Work

If you find that your outlet never really worked properly, it could be that the person that installed it did a poor job. The previous homeowners could have hired an electrician that wasn't licensed, resulting in a poor job. It's also possible that the previous homeowner took it upon themselves to complete a DIY (do-it-yourself) electrical job. Many homeowners tend to complete DIY work in their home when they are not experienced enough to tackle the project.

#4 GFCI Outlet Failure

If you have GFCI outlets installed, this could be the cause of your problem. GFCI outlets are typically installed near high moisture areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and garages. You can identify a GFCI outlet by the "test" and "reset" button located on the outlet. They are designed to cut off power to the outlet if moisture gets into the electrical receptors. If the outlet that isn't working is a GFCI outlet, try pressing the "reset" button to bring power back to your outlet.
