The Dangers of Space Heaters

Heating equipment is a leading cause of fires in U.S homes, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Fire departments responded to an average of 52,050 homes that involved heating equipment which resulted in 490 civilian deaths and 1,400 civilian injuries each year between 2012-2016. 86% of these civilian deaths caused by home heating involved stationary or portable space heaters. In light of these devastating statistics, our electrical contracting company at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to share with you some important tips for using space heaters this winter and shed light on how dangerous they can be.

Never Leave a Space Heater Unattended

It is extremely important to never leave a space heater unattended. This is a common mistake made by many and if you want to ensure your safety never leave a space heater unattended, even if you are asleep in the home.

Never Use Gas or Kerosene Heaters Indoors

Gas and kerosene space heaters are portable and low cost to use but when you bring them indoors becasue they need proper ventilation. Using these types of heaters indoors can release toxic gas into the air such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

Never Place Space Heaters Up High

While it may seem like a good idea to place your space heaters up high to keep away from children, this is not a good idea at all. When you place your space heater on top of tables, dressers, or other pieces of furniture, you risk it being pulled off which could result in a fire.

Never Overload Your Circuit

Another thing to consider is that space heaters can cause an electrical fire. If you use a space heater, it's important to not overload your circuit. Using a power strip is a great way to enhance your safety.

Never Place a Space Heater Near Flammable Items

One of the leading causes of fires relating to space heaters is placing them near things that could catch on fire such as curtains, furniture, bedding etc. The best way to prevent a fire from occurring is to leave your space heater in an open area where there is no possibility for an item to come in contact with them.
