Dock Safety 101

Summer at the Lake of the Ozarks is full of fun on the water whether you are out on your boat or hanging out at your dock. Sometimes you have so much fun that safety gets put on the backburner. Staying safe on the water is extremely important. While the water is a lot of fun, it can also be very dangerous. Catalyst Electric wants to help keep you safe this Summer so we have some tips to keep you safe at your dock for the remainder of the Summer season at the Lake!

Test All GFCIs

You must have GFCIs at your dock receptacles. The purpose of a GFCI is to measure a circuit's current and if something is not right, it will trip the GFCI and cut off the power. This is especially important around water because it can sense when there is electric current going into the water. It is a good idea to test your GFCIs once a month. Typically, you can find them along the ramp of your dock.

Contact a Professional for Repairs

It's always best to contact your local electricians at the Lake of the Ozarks if an issue with your electric at your dock arises. There are a lot of home projects that you are more than capable of tackling but unless you are certified electrician it is best to hire an experienced electrician at the Lake of the Ozarks to fix any issues. Your dock is required by law to be up to code and a professional will know what those guidelines are.

Metal Dock Frames

All metal dock frames should have bonding jumpers that connect to an on-shore grounding rod. This is a safety precaution designed to trip your GFCI or circuit breaker should your dock become electrified.

Ensure Neighboring Docks Have Been Inspected

It is a good idea to ask your neighbors if their dock has been inspected and up to code. For public safety, the local fire protection districts at the Lake of the Ozarks and Village of Four Seasons require electrical inspections and permits for all private boat docks equipped with electric power. While this is required, some might not take this seriously. Even if you do everything to ensure the safety of your dock if your neighbor's dock becomes electrified swimmers near your dock could be in danger.

Keep your family and friends safe by ensuring the safety of your dock this Summer. Follow these tips to help increase the safety of your dock. Summer is the most fun season here at the Lake, don't ruin the fun by not making sure that your dock's electricity is safe. Catalyst Electric offers FREE dock inspections! Give us a call and we can come to check your dock and ensure that everything is in working order. Everyone from Catalyst Electrics hopes you have a fun rest of your Summer at the Lake of the Ozarks!
