Electrical Tips for Staying Safe at Home

Electricity is an everyday part of our lives … in fact, we don’t know what to do without it! But it can also be dangerous if not handled properly, or if you don’t know the signs of an electrical hazard. As electricians at Lake of the Ozarks, we are fully aware that electrical problems can lead to house fires and other disasters. But those disasters can be preventable. So, today we wanted to share a few safety tips to keep you safe with electricity at home. If you want to know the signs to look for and hazards to avoid, we have details in this blog.

Outlets

- It is important not to overload your outlets. If you are using power strips to create more outlets, consider having more outlets installed. If you are tripping breakers repeatedly, that is a safety issue and you should call a professional electrician. Please tell your teens!

- Electricity and water don’t mix. That is why GFCI outlets are a must in any area of your home near water or high moisture. If you do not have GFCI outlets, Catalyst can install them for you.

- If there are children in the home it is a good idea to have outlet covers, or better yet have a tamper-resistant receptacle installed.

Appliances

- Unplug your devices when they are not being used.

- Don’t use an electrical device near water or moisture. A deadly example would be using your cell phone in the bathroom while it is plugged in to charge. If you accidentally drop your phone in the water while it is plugged in it is extremely likely to cause electrocution.

- Give your appliances some space for air circulation, especially if they create any heat.

Cords and Plugs

- Extension cords are not a permanent solution, if you use one on a long-term basis, consider having outlets added by a professional electrician.

- Never remove the third prong of a plug or use it if it’s missing. It acts as a ground and serves as an important safety feature.

- If you use extension cords outside, make sure they are made for outdoor use.

- Avoid putting extension cords in places where they will be walked on like under rugs or in walkways.

- When using a power strip, make sure it is a UL-certified power strip. If you’re paying $10 or less, it probably isn’t.

- Always use the plug to disconnect a device, don’t pull it out by the cord.
