Are You Guilty of Overloading Power Strips?

In today's technology-driven world, a lot of homes and business are not equipped to support the influx in technology and therefore do not have enough outlets. Often, this leads homeowners and business owners to use powerstrips to supplement more outlets. Overloading power strips can be dangerous causing electric shock and in some cases even cause a fire! Catalyst Electric wants to help spread awareness for electrical safety so today, our electrical contracting company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few safety tips regarding the do's and don'ts when using power strips.

Don't Use the Piggyback Method, Ever

Unfoutunilty, many folks use the piggyback method if they don't have enough outlets - this is especially true around your tv! The piggyback method is when you use overload a powerstrip and the create more room, then you plug another powerstrip into it to create more plugs. This is a BIG no no! Each power strip is only rated for a certain amount of electric current - each power strip is different depending on the design and structure. Piggybacking is an extreme fire hazard and should never be done.

Choose a Power Strip with Overload Protection

Some power strips come with the safety feature overload protection. This feature will automatically cut off power supply when the power strip is overloaded.

Don't Use Power Strips for High Wattage Appliances

Larger appliances such as heaters, TVs, stoves, etc. require high wattage to run which means they need more power. Most power strips are not designed to handle a high amount of wattage and therefore should not be used for those appliances.

Extensions Cords are NOT for Permanent Use

Some people don't realize that extension cords are absolutely not intended for permanent use - or they choose to ignore it for the convenience factor. For your safety and the safety of others, don't use an extension cord as a permanent power solution.

Have Catalyst Electric Install More Outlets!

While it may be tempting to use power strips in your home more than you should, the safest option is to have a certified electrician at the Lake of the Ozarks install more outlets in your home. As we mentioned earlier, most homes, especially older ones, are not equipped with enough outlets to support the amount of technology we use. Keep you and your family safe and call Catalyst Electric to inspect your homes electrical system and install more outlets and upgrade your electrical panel if necessary!
